The town of Ilhabela is comprised of the Islands of São Sebastião, Búzios and Vitória; plus the isles of Cabras, Serraria, Castelhanos, Lagoa, Figueira and Enchovas.
São Sebastião, the most popular of the islands, is a well-liked tourist destination. It boasts clear, calm waters on the side facing the continent, and deserted and paradisiacal beaches – protected by the Ilhabela State Park – on the side facing the open sea. Water sports are a symbol of the location, which becomes the venue of the largest south American sailing competition every year.
Trails through conserved forest land, beautiful waterfalls and excellent spots for diving, in addition to a dazzling sunset, complement the list of attractions.
Ilhabela once had well developed fishing and agricultural activities. Most of its produce was taken to Santos for trading. Currently, the city’s economy is based on tourism.
